Beech House School

Date published: 14 December 2017

This week at Beech House, the students spent a day in Shakespeare’s birthplace. After a very early start for both staff and students, three minibuses and a car made their way down the M6 to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where 43 students then marched through the quiet town towards Shakespeare’s birthplace.

The pupils fired questions at the experts whilst touring Shakespeare’s old home before sitting outside to enjoy the actors perform scenes from any Shakespeare play that the pupils requested without lines or scripts.

The students marvelled at the Elizabethan customs and some even eagerly queued to try on gloves made from Labrador skin and later handled squirrel skin.

Luckily, we were fortunate with the weather, so the students enjoyed their lunch by the riverbank; some even enjoyed an ice cream too.

After lunch, we visited The Swan Theatre where the pupils learnt about how special effects, such as fighting and death scenes, are created to look realistic. They also learnt about how costumes were created, how much fake blood is used each week and how makeup is used, before trying on some of the costumes for themselves.

Students then spent the afternoon visiting the site where Shakespeare’s adult house once was. Here, the once tired students were suddenly buzzing with chatter as they looked through the spy-holes and in the drawers of the model replica house. Some students built their own house from 3D jigsaws, whilst others read some of Shakespeare’s famous plays.

We then visited Hall’s Croft, where students learnt about more customs of the Elizabethan Era. They learnt about Dr Hall, a physician who diagnosed illnesses and what treatments he used. The students were quite repulsed at the different coloured urine samples that were on display to highlight certain conditions!

The day ended with a relaxing canal tour where pupils got to take in the sights of Stratford-Upon-Avon and learn more about the local history, including the Holy Trinity church where Shakespeare is buried.
