Council plans to join big clean up

Date published: 08 July 2008

September will give you the chance to make Rochdale a cleaner, greener place to live as the Council will be supporting a countrywide Big Tidy Up campaign, which will be the biggest clean up ever in England.

Members of the public, schools and businesses are all being encouraged to plan events centred around a great big tidy up – and to help them get started, they can register for a Big Tidy Up pack online:

Councillor Wera Hobhouse, cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “Leaving litter around for everyone else to look at is abhorrent and downright depressing, so supporting the Big Tidy Up campaign is a great opportunity for us all to come together and do something about it – and have fun at the same time!”

Planning ahead is important to the success of the event, so the Council has provided some tips to help you on your way to a successful, enjoyable Big Tidy Up event:

Preparation – it is important to decide where you would like to do your tidy up. This could be anywhere from a local landmark to a well known 'grot spot.' Event organisers should also conduct a risk assessment ahead of their Big Tidy Up. Rochdale Council can offer guidance on this.

Community involvement – if you’re planning an event and want to get the community on board, then you have to tell them about it! Put up posters in shops, schools, libraries and community centres, for example.

Make it fun! – If it looks dull and boring, then people won’t be interested. The key is to make your event as fun as possible. To get people involved, why not make your Big Tidy Up a sponsored challenge and help a charity?
