Borough’s roads being improved

Date published: 13 July 2017

Rochdale Council Highways Maintenance Team is working with contractor, Balfour Beatty, to deliver the reactive highway maintenance service that is improving the Borough’s roads.

Since the 1 April, the Highways Maintenance Team has:

  • Cleaned 10,843 highway gullies.
  • Completed 2,875 highway patches (repairs to potholes and rough road surfaces) .
  • Inspected 773 works carried out by utility companies on the highway network.
  • Received and responded to 265 service requests received via the call centre.
  • Received and responded to 159 service requests via elected members and the electronic logging system.
  • Attended 56 emergency responses within one hour of notification.
  • Attended 98 emergency responses within 24 hours of notification.
  • Attended 115 out of hours call outs.
  • Inspected 855km of highway network for safety defects

So far of the £1 million extra allocated to potholes, the Council has spent about £650,000.

Councillor Neil Emmott, Cabinet Member for Housing and Environment, said: “I am pleased with the way Highways has delivered on this. Since 2012, we have now allocated an additional £14 million to repairing our highways across the borough and as a result the percentage of our route network in need of repair has fallen remarkably.

“At this year's budget fixing, we also allocated an additional £1 million on top of the extra £1 million for patching, which will be used to fully resurface some of the worst roads in the borough. Eight schemes have been identified by an independent surveyor across all four townships and these works will begin shortly.”
