Councillors seeking support for condemnation of terrorism and to stamp out homelessness

Date published: 06 July 2017

Two notices of motions notices have been submitted ahead of next Wednesday’s full council meeting.

Councillor Sameena Zaheer is asking for support for her condemnation of terrorism and hate crime - her motion is seconded by Cllr Janet Emsley,

The motion states: “To let distrust and hatred grow between our communities would be to let terrorists think they can win. We as a council and the wider community cannot let that happen.”

Councillor Linda Robison Robinson, is asking for support for her campaign to stamp out homelessness across the borough with the help of the new mayor and dedicated staff - her motion is seconded by Councillor Liam O’Rouke.

It promised that the council would build specialised supported accommodation for young people with access to education, volunteering and employment as well as expand mental health rehabilitation programmes for sufferers.

The counciloors are hoping to receive the unanimous backing of council colleagues.

Council leader, Richard Farnell said: “It’s important that as a council we have the full support of all councillors on these two issues.

“Homelessness, terrorism and hate crimes don’t observe party political lines, so we shouldn’t either.

“I’m sure I speak for the whole chamber when I say I fully expect these two very worthwhile motions to get the full support they deserve.”
