Students raise £372 for Gem Appeal

Date published: 05 July 2017

Early Years students from Hopwood Hall College raised £372 after organising a charity walk in aid the Gem Appeal.

The students organised the walk after Karen Johnson visited their class as guest speaker earlier in the year.

Student Azeeshah Hussain said of her fundraising experience: "I did not know anything about Hunters Syndrome until Karen came in and explained everything.

“When Karen came to college to meet us and tell us about her life journey, her children and the effect of Hunters Syndrome, it was a heart touching and remarkable how a mother of three has achieve so much for the sake for her two boys, who were diagnosed with Hunters Syndrome.

“Karen is a woman who believes that they could be a change and a cure for hunters syndrome. Meeting Karen made me realise that we should never give up."

Alison Loughnane, lecturer in Early Years at Hopwood Hall College said: “After Karen came and met with our students, she really generated an increased awareness in our students in regards Hunters Syndrome and individual needs of children in general.

“It’s fantastic that someone can be so open in educating our students, we really appreciated her giving up her time and we’re happy to try and help reach the £250,000 target.”
