SG6 Foundation supports Kitchen Kapers

Date published: 05 July 2017

The SG6 Foundation presented a cheque to the Kitchen Kapers mental health cookery class at Crimble Croft Community Centre, Heywood.

The Kitchen Kapers is a group run by Louise Kershaw of Crimble Croft which aims to give people the skills necessary to be able to cope in the kitchen, how to make basic meals and how to eat healthily.

The group was struggling for money so applied to the SG6 foundation for funds. Their application was granted and Brad Gartland and Pete Duffy from the foundation presented the group with a cheque, which should secure their future.

Louise Kershaw, centre manager, said: "I heard about the foundation and the good deeds they were doing and decided to apply. Our application was successful and we were given £250 which is fantastic for us. The foundation were great to deal with and Brad and Pete who came to present the cheque were delighted to see what they were contributing to."

The SG6 foundation was set up last year after the death of Steve Gartland, who had struggled bravely against the effects of depression. Steve was a well known local sportsman having played rugby league for Rochdale Hornets, Oldham and Mayfield, where he was also a successful coach with the first team and the Mustangs youth section.

Pete Duffy, who was a close friend of Steve, said: "Steve's death left a lot of people devastated, he left behind a legacy at Mayfield with many of 'Garty's boys' playing now in the first and second teams. After discussions with Brad and Liam, Steve's sons and Joanne his widow we decided we would like to keep Steve's name alive and what better way to do that than by helping others who are in difficulty.

"We raise money through events locally and individual sponsorships."

The SG6 Foundation is holding a race night fundraiser on Saturday (8 July) at the Mayfield Rugby Club, with plenty of prizes on offer.

Mr Duffy said: "We are hoping for a good turn out and all are welcome - a great night for a great cause is expected."
