Recycling collection points closing
Date published: 04 July 2017
Community recycling collection point
The last community recycling collection points, which were introduced in the 1980s and are mainly located in car parks and at licensed premises throughout the borough, are to close.
Persistent fly-tipping at the recycling collection points means the decision has been taken to close the last four remaining sites, beginning on 17 July - all sites will be removed by the end of July.
Residents and businesses are being given notice that these collection points are being removed, and the council will monitor the sites closely to ensure that they are not being used for fly-tipping.
Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence which can lead to imprisonment or fines of up to £50,000.
Councillor Neil Emmott, the council’s cabinet member for housing and environment, said: “It’s unfortunate that despite achieving recycling success in the home, recycling collection points are consistently being used to dispose of unwanted rubbish rather than recycling and can no longer be a justified resource. It is a shame for those who want to recycle that this solution has to be removed due to the behaviour of a few.”
