Middleton Parish Church School have been shortlisted as finalists in a creative competition after rapping about Clean Air Day to raise awareness of poor air quality and pollution.

The school is the only one in the borough to have been shortlisted as one of 15 entries from 13 schools in the contest, organised by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

The winner will be announced at a big screening event in Manchester this month where a judging panel will choose the best video ad and audio ad.

The catchy adverts include storylines, songs and slogans to encourage people to think about making lifestyle changes- such as walking and cycling more, using public transport, switching idling car engines off and sticking to side streets-to reduce and avoid pollution.

Pupils from Year 3 to Year 6 learnt more about the causes of air pollution – which contributes to more than 2,000 premature deaths every year in Greater Manchester alone – and what they and their families can do to protect themselves and the environment.

Helen Smith, TfGM’s Head of Logistics, Environment and Active Travel, said: “You can’t see air pollution but, unfortunately, our young people breathe in dangerous pollutants every day on their way to school or while playing on our streets.

“The competition has really driven home the message about this important issue, which affects them and their families. It’s been a fun way to find out more about a serious issue while learning new digital and marketing skills in the process.

“I’ve been really impressed with the shortlisted entries: it’s clear that a lot of time and effort has been involved and I’d like to thank everyone who has taken part.”
