Cash-strapped Council spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on temps

Date published: 03 July 2017

Cash-strapped Rochdale Borough Council continues to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on temporary staff.

In the first three months of this year, the Council spent £833,514.65 on agency staff - though that figure is down £250,000 on the same period last year.

  • January: £262,751.20
  • February: £245,856.37
  • March: £324,907.08

David Wilcock, the council’s acting director of resources, said: “We only use agency staff when it is absolutely necessary for things like maternity leave, staff absence, short-term projects and where we need people so that we can continue delivering vital services.

"The majority of this spend is with our approved agency and is only made when it is essential to service needs and represents value for money.”

The Council also spent close to £100,000 on consultants in the same period.

  • January: £60,903.35
  • February: £11,912.02
  • March: £27,576.27
