Tony Lloyd appointed Shadow Housing Minister

Date published: 03 July 2017

Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd has joined the Labour Party front bench after being appointed Shadow Housing Minister by Jeremy Corbyn.

His appointment comes just weeks after he re-entered Parilament following his landslide General Election victory in Rochdale.

Mr Lloyd said: “I’m really pleased to have been offered the role.

"I know housing is a major issue in the town and across the borough of Rochdale and I have the opportunity to partially influence the national policy for Labour.

“Housing has been badly neglected in recent years and it’s a policy issue. We’ve seen this in recent events in London.

“We need to look to improve housing in the future and that they meet standards and are built to equip people of the community for many decades.

“Like many northern towns, we have a shortage because we have the wrong type of housing stock. With the bedroom tax, some houses are no longer appropriate.

“I’m delighted to take the task for the people of the Rochdale constituency and the country.”

An experienced politician, Mr Lloyd was previously a Manchester MP who stepped down to become Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner.

The former Mayor of Greater Manchester won his Rochdale seat on 8 June after the disgraced Simon Danczuk was deselected by Labour.
