Councillor Chris Furlong completes Southport Half Marathon

Date published: 03 July 2017

Councillor Chris Furlong has completed the Southport Half Marathon on Sunday in under two hours.

This was the councillor’s first half-marathon, which he completed in one hour 57 minutes and 22 seconds.

The 13.1 mile race was his third and final race following the Bolton 10k and the Great Manchester Run to raise funds for three charities across the borough with which he has a connection: The Lighthouse Project Middleton, Springhill Hospice and Heywood Guides Senior Section.

He said: “I think I paced myself really well. I averaged five-and-a-half minutes per kilometre and though people were passing me at the start, I started passing them towards the end.

"The weather was good but the sun came out towards the end and all of us seemed to hit the wall with about a mile left. It was like running through treacle with legs of cement.

“I really enjoyed it but my legs are tired.

"Thanks to everyone who has sponsored and wished me well.”

So far, Councillor Furlong has raised around £1,300 towards his chosen charities. He hopes to break £1,500 so each charity will receive £500.
