Liz McInnes calls on government to rethink school funding cuts

Liz McInnes, MP for Heywood and Middleton, has urged the government to think again about school cuts during a speech in parliament.

Ms McInnes, who was re-elected for a third time as MP for Heywood and Middleton on 8 June, raised the fact that schools in Rochdale borough would be hit with cuts of around £15 million under Tory plans for changes to the funding formula for education.

She said: ‘In recent months I’ve been contacted by many headteachers in Heywood and Middleton who are deeply concerned about the impact of Tory changes to the funding formula on their schools.

"Schools in Rochdale Borough face a loss of £550 per pupil. Such a loss would severely harm the quality of education our children receive, threatening class sizes, teaching jobs and resources.

"The general election result clearly showed that the Conservatives have no mandate to carry on regardless with huge cuts to public services. Our schools, our police, our firefighters, and our NHS and social care system simply can’t cope with any more cutbacks and people have had enough."
