Hypnotist Alex Smith has been awarded the Close-up Magical Champion Trophy and the Sly Smith Shield at the 2017 Order of the Magi Close-up Magic competition.

He was awarded the winner’s cup trophy for outright ‘Best Magical Performance’ and the shield for ‘Best Card Trick’.

41-year-old Alex, who lives in Spotland with his wife Rachel and seven-year-old daughter Ashleigh, was presented with the awards by Sly Smith and magician Ian Brown from the Modern Mystic League in Blackburn.

The Order of the Magi is the third oldest magical society and magician’s club in England and is based at The New Irish Heritage Centre in Manchester.

Alex, real name Jonathan, was born whilst his parents were travelling with Gandey’s Circus and he made his stage debut aged three as ‘Flap The Clown’.

He is now a multiple award-winning musician and award-winning hypnotist, having been inducted into the South African Academy of Hypnosis Hall of Fame last year.
