Rochdale Council of Mosques Annual Iftar 2017

Date published: 11 June 2017

People from all communities, faiths and backgrounds were invited by the Rochdale Council of Mosques at its annual 'Iftar' gathering on Friday (9 June).

The Iftar meal, which marks the end of the day’s fasting after sunset, was held at the Al Quba Mosque in Wardleworth and attended by over 150 people.

Guests included the Deputy Mayor Mohammed Zaman, the Vicar of Rochdale, Reverend Mark Coleman, the Bishop of Middleton Mark Davies and representatives from member mosques, community leaders, councillors and officers from Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, as well as members of the public.

Dobir Miah, CEO of Rochdale Council of Mosques, delivered a presentation about Islam, the month of Ramadhan and the reasons Muslims fast.

Tahir Mahmood, Chairman of Rochdale Council of Mosques, commented: “Many thanks to everyone who attended and for making the evening an enjoyable and successful one. I would also like to thank all the volunteers and the management committee of the Al Quba Mosque who worked tirelessly, despite fasting themselves, to ensure everyone was fed.”

The day of Eid heralds the end of Ramadhan, which is expected to be on Sunday 25 June or Monday 26 June (subject to moon sighting confirmation – as the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar system).
