Danczuk supporter interviewed under caution

Date published: 10 June 2017

A Rochdale man has been "interviewed under caution" by Greater Manchester Police on "suspicion of breaching a rape victim’s anonymity".

The 57-year-old posted a letter on social media that police say "could lead to the identification of a victim of rape".

The letter was written by Simon Danczuk after he was told no further action was being taken following him being accused of raping a woman in Westminster in 2016.

The law grants victims and alleged victims of rape lifelong anonymity.

A GMP spokesperson said: "On Friday 2 June 2017 GMP received a complaint that the original report was false and, given that the case had been investigated by another police force, the complainant was advised to contact the MPS [Metropolitan Police Service].

"On Tuesday 7 June 2017 GMP were made aware of a letter circulating on social media which could lead to the identification of a victim of rape, contrary to the Sexual Offences Act 1992 which grants victims of sexual offences the right to lifelong anonymity.

"A 57-year old man voluntarily attended a police station that evening where he was interviewed under caution on suspicion of breaching a rape victim’s anonymity contrary to the Sexual Offences Act 1992.

"Enquiries into the matter remain ongoing."
