Date published: 01 June 2017

Former Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk, now the Independent candidate for Rochdale in the forthcoming general election, has been told by police that 'no further action will be taken' after an investigation following an accusation that he had raped a woman in Westminster in June 2016.

Danczuk, who denied the allegation, was interviewed at Holborn Police Station in London in May as part of the police investigation.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: "On Monday 8 May 2017 officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) referred an allegation of rape to the Metropolitan Police.

"The incident is alleged to have occurred in June 2016 at a location in Westminster.

"Detectives from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command investigated the allegation.

"A 50-year-old man voluntarily attended a central London police station on Monday 15 May where he was interviewed under caution.

"On Wednesday 31 May he was informed that no further action will be taken."

Danczuk, who did not respond to an invitation to comment, still awaits the outcome of a Metropolitan Police investigation after he was ordered by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority to repay £11,500 in expenses he knowingly claimed in accommodation costs for two children who did not live with him. It is understood a file has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service.
