Your vote is your voice – residents urged to vote

Date published: 31 May 2017

With Thursday 8 June approaching there is just over a week to go until voters across the borough elect their Member of Parliament.

Everyone who has registered to vote should have already been sent a polling card, containing details of their polling station and when they can vote.

The council will be sending a reminder poll card to every eligible elector across the borough this weekend.

Polling stations will be open on Thursday 8 June from 7am until 10pm. Polling station staff will take names and addresses to check whether people are on the register before voters are given a ballot paper.

Instructions should be read carefully as votes may not count if ballot papers are completed incorrectly.

The council is asking postal voters to return their postal pack as quickly as possible. This can be done up to 10pm on polling day. Postal votes should be posted by the owner and not anyone else. Anyone who is unable to leave their home to post their vote, either because of health or mobility problems, can call the council on 0300 303 0345 to have it collected.

Rochdale Online will be at the counts in Rochdale and Heywood and giving the usual commentary as the night's events unfoled.

The results of the general election will be announced in the early hours of Friday morning and will be available on the Rochdale Online websiteat:

Acting Returning Officer Steve Rumbelow said: “It’s really important that people take the time to vote on 8 June and participate in the democratic process. Whether they are voting in person, or by post, it’s quick and easy. We should never take democracy for granted - it’s how people can make their voice heard and ensure they have an influence and a say on the decisions that affect their lives.”
