‘Young Voices: Raising Awareness of Mental Health in Rochdale’

Date published: 30 May 2017

Team Rochdale, from Muslim Community Events (MCE), in partnership with Thrive, have launched a Young Voices campaign.

‘Young Voices: Raising Awareness of Mental Health in Rochdale’ is about raising greater awareness about youth mental health in the borough of Rochdale and raising funds to support the work being done.

More young people are suffering from mental health problems, stress, fear, anger, and serious anxiety and early intervention is understood to be key.

- Emotional and Mental Health problems affect about 1:10 children and young people.
- 3% of pupils aged 8-11, 2% of pupils aged 12-15 have low self-esteem scores.
- 31% of Year 6 pupils are afraid of going to school due to bullying. 28% in Year 8 and 17% in Year 10.

MCE is a voluntary not-for-profit organisation that has partnered with Thrive, which is an emotional health and wellbeing service for young people aged up to 19 years, in the Rochdale borough.

Thrive recently opened a new hub in Rochdale town centre called Around the Corner.

Young people can drop in and speak to the team about any issues they are having. Around the Corner is located at 48-50 Drake Street and is open Monday to Thursday 10am to 6pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 4pm.

The campaign target is £10,000 which will help Thrive with the services that they provide.

Over a course of the next five months, Team Rochdale will be organising events in the borough including a fundraising car wash, a sponsored walk and barbeque.
