Year 11 Football – Rochdale Cup Final

The year 11 Rochdale cup final was played at Hopwood on Wednesday night between St Cuthbert's and Oulder Hill with Cuthbert's winning 3:1.

The match was very stop and start with the strong wind and pitch not helping with the pleasing on the eye football. Although we had considerably more possession we wree unable to turn the advantage into any meaningful chances.

Just before the break Fabio Tavares found himself through on goal and scored with aplomb to put his side one up at half time. The second half was a little better spectacle of football although Oulder Hill started to create some half chances. Then a needless free kick enabled them to put the ball in the box, Cuthbert's failed to clear it and it dribbled through the keepers legs to equalise.

This gave Cuthbert's the jolt they needed and a wonderful through ball by Bartek Kwasnik enabled Ged Greaves to restore the advantage. Fabio almost scored with an overhead kick but the keeper managed to juggle it away from goal. Then the best move of the match with Ged, Jack Sammutt, Faith Okundaye, Tom Liversedge and Jake Pascoe all combined with one touch passing to put Tom through on goal. The match finished with Cuthbert's winning 3:1.

They end the season unbeaten, winning The League, Rochdale Cup and the Greater Manchester Catholic Cup. Fabio has scored almost two goals a game so he must be in contention for player of the season. Well done boys you have made your teachers very proud.

Rounders

The Year 9 and 10 Rounders squads made an excellent start to this year's Rounders competitions. Year 9 were narrowly beaten into 2nd place in a very tight and tense first rally with some excellent hitting from Alicia Brooks and outstanding fielding from Ruth Stott.

The Year 10 team played in a very competitive Year 10 rally and finished in a respectable 6th place.

The Year 7 and 8 Rounders teams start off their season on Wednesday and Thursday this week and are very excited to play their first games.

Student Council – Have Your Say Day

On Friday 28 April, St. Cuthbert's playground was a picture of freedom of speech in action! Over 100 pupils utilised the opportunity to have their opinions heard by members of our student council. The student council may have carried large speech bubble placards and clipboards but our message was not one of protest: our motto was "your voice, your choice!"

It was lovely to hear such positive feedback about our school, including "this is a really friendly school and it has great teachers." One of the most frequently used words in the feedback was "supportive" and we were thrilled that students feel so valued here.

During form time, all students were asked about their knowledge of extra-curricular activities on offer in our school, and a vast majority reported that they currently attended or had attended a club during lunch or afterschool. The effort our students put into extra-curricular clubs and teams was fantastic to read about and is greatly appreciated. All the ideas around future clubs will be collated and presented to Dr Meehan in due course. Thank you to all the students and staff involved which allowed Have Your Say Day to be such a success!

LINC News

This week we welcomed Holy Family Primary School to St. Cuthbert’s. It was the first of three promotional activities we have arranged for the group. They spent the morning with Mrs Moore and Mr Brown in the Learning and Innovation Centre. All of the students created a slot for their radio broadcast including a jingle, selling points and an interview about an event in school.

It was then time to tie the show together by selecting commercial radio adverts and songs to complete the broadcasts. During the morning, the students also had the opportunity to complete a radio quiz by identifying songs, theme tunes and TV adverts. The enthusiasm of the group was made apparent when we listened to the radio shows through our built-in classroom sound system. We are looking forward to seeing the same group after the summer holidays when they will be creating full colour leaflets to promote their school.
