Trams are running as normal Monday morning after a major technical failure with Metrolink's communications systems stopped all tram services running from 4.00pm on Sunday.

The network was shut down because of a control room failure.

Technicians identify and fixed the problem shortly after midnight.

Transport for Greater Manchester said it was "not an issue Metrolink has experienced previously".

It was caused by "a component attached to the Metrolink control network sending out spurious communications, which resulted in the safety system correctly shutting down".

Danny Vaughan, Head of Metrolink at TfGM, said: "I'd like to apologise for the disruption to the network and the impact it has had on our customers."
