‘Close to 40 vehicles’ vandalised in ‘criminal damage spree’

Date published: 03 May 2017

Close to 40 vehicles were damaged during a ‘criminal damage spree’ on Sunday.

Police are appealing for information after cars had their windows and mirrors smashed during a spate of criminal damage.

Sometime between 3.30am and 10.30am on Sunday 23 April 2017, a group targeted cars, smashing windscreens, windows and mirrors.

Enquiries suggest the group stole a silver Ford minibus taxi from Kirkway about 3.30am that morning and then drove around before jumping out of the vehicle to smash the cars.

Streets involved included Kensington Street, Jutland Avenue and Sandy Lane.

On a number of occasions, items left in the vehicles were also stolen.

Officers believe close to 40 vehicles were damaged during the spree but there could be more people yet to come forward to police.

There were five offenders who are all described as white. Four of them are believed to be in their mid-twenties whilst a fifth boy is believed to be in his teens.

One of the men was tall and wearing a dark tracksuit, the second man was wearing a black baseball cap and had facial hair, the third man had a black jacket and light-coloured bottoms, whilst the third man was wearing a blue top.

The fourth man was believed to be wearing all black and a baseball cap whilst the youngest member is thought to have thick blond hair.

They were last seen about 8.45am on what is known as the Greave estate.

Neighbourhood Beat Sergeant Alastair Twidale said: “This was a mindless act of vandalism where thousands of pounds’ worth of damage has been caused.

“We have been reviewing CCTV and are continuing to work hard to identify the offenders.

“The community might know who these people are and I would urge to call police.

“These will be people’s sons, brothers and boyfriends, and I believe someone could have vital information which could help us.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 101.
