Do you have the drive to help people in your area?

Date published: 27 April 2017

Would you like to be a volunteer driver? If you are a car owner and you are looking for a rewarding voluntary role then this is an opportunity to do something worthwhile that could also help you with job prospects or a career change.

Our friends at the Council for Voluntary Services in Rochdale have asked us to let you know about their volunteer driver service.

The scheme offers affordable transport in the Rochdale area for adults who are unable or find it difficult to use public transport. This may be because they are elderly, have mental health problems or have mobility problems.

The service is available for regular or one off journeys to social events or medical appointments.

Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to provide a door to door flexible transport service. They pick the passenger up from their home, take them to wherever they are going and can, if requested to do so, wait with them until they are ready to return home.

If you or someone you know is interested in using this service you will need to register as a member of the scheme and pay the annual membership subscription.

The service costs an annual membership subscription of £15. After that, for each journey booked a mileage contribution of 45p per mile is charged. This is to reimburse the driver for their petrol and to support the cost of insuring and maintaining their vehicles. The drivers do not get paid for their time, this is donated voluntarily.

Accompanying carers travel at no extra cost.

Once joined, you, your carer or a member of your family simply phones the CVSR Call Centre to book your journey and you are off.
