Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority says full investigation of fire at Chichester Street recycling plant will be carried out

Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) has said there will be a full investigation into the fire at its Waithlands In Vessel Composting (IVC) site at Chichester Street, Rochdale in the early hours of Saturday (8 April).

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority said: "At 12:15am in the early hours of Saturday morning, 8 April, security personnel at the facility discovered a developing fire, following well-established incident response plans, staff alerted emergency services.

"The Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service attended site and whilst they remain on site, the fire is now under control. The site was not operational at the time and no personnel, other than security, were on site when the fire was discovered, the Environment Agency have been notified.

 “We will be working with our operators Viridor and all relevant organisations to carry out a full investigation.”

The Household Waste Recycling Centre adjacent to the main facility remains open to the public.

A spokesperson for Rochdale Council said: "The household recycling facility is still in operation and we’re diverting waste from collections to other sites so there is no effect for residents and there will be no alterations to collections, etc."
