Greater Manchester marks International Roma Day

Local people are the key to building cohesive communities that stand together against hatred and prejudice, says Greater Manchester’s Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner.

Speaking on the eve of International Roma Day, which celebrates Romani culture and raises awareness of the issues facing Roma people across the world, Tony Lloyd said: "Greater Manchester’s rich culture and diversity is our strength. We are a region that has always welcomed people from a wide-range of backgrounds, bringing communities together to learn, share and celebrate.

“On International Roma Day we remind ourselves that sadly many Roma people have been victims of hatred, fuelled by misinformation and ignorance. We will not tolerate hate crime in Greater Manchester and will continue to challenge prejudice and build understanding.

“As we continue on our journey to create a stronger Greater Manchester, free from hatred and fear, I encourage each and every person to join me in a renewed commitment to stand together against hate. Whether it’s speaking out against those who spew hatred, bringing neighbours together to learn about different cultures and values, or talking to your children about respect and tolerance, we can each play our part.”

International Roma Day is an annual event that takes place on the 8 April.
