Harehill Park vandals told – ‘we’re watching you’ after CCTV upgrade

A closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in Littleborough has been given an upgrade in a bid to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour in the area.

The new camera at Harehill Park has a 1080p HD resolution and can record images at 25 frames per second, which is the equivalent of watching television.

It can also provide clear images in very low lighting conditions during the night, which means there is now a greater chance of offenders being caught.

Rochdale Borough Council’s Pennines Township Committee funded the £7,000 upgrade which involved moving the new camera to a better location for clearer images.

Clear and live-feed CCTV footage can now be viewed of the children’s park, Harehill House and the bandstand to assist with crime prevention and offender prosecution. It can also be used as an evidence resource to deal with complaints from residents.

The park is monitored by the council’s central CCTV control room 24 hour per day, seven days a week; with direct contact to Greater Manchester Police (GMP) via radio. Images from the operator’s monitors can also be viewed by the police from their headquarters in Manchester.

The camera at Harehill Park is part of a wider CCTV system which also covers Harehill Road, Church Street and the Memorial Gardens.

Councillor John Blundell, chairman of the Pennines Township Committee, said: “The safety and wellbeing of our residents is of up most importance to us so we are really pleased that we have been able to upgrade the CCTV camera at Harehill Park. I hope it will act as a deterrent against any antisocial behaviour and criminal activity taking place in the area so our community can feel safe, reassured and enjoy living, working and playing in Littleborough.”
