The competition, held at Hopwood Hall Technology Centre, consisted of electrical installation, carpentry and joinery, plumbing, painting and decorating, brickwork and plastering categories.

Students from Salford City College, Hopwood Hall College, The Manchester College, Oldham College, Bury College, Stockport College, Wigan & Leigh College, Tameside College, Trafford College and Bolton College competed to gain the title of best in Greater Manchester.

Hopwood Hall College came out as the overall winners of the construction competition, with six different colleges placing first in the individual category wins.

Bury College won three first prizes; William Thompson came first in senior plumbing, with Sean Sutton and Oliver Dexter making it a clean sweep for Bury in carpentry and joinery by taking home both the junior and senior top spots respectively.

The Manchester College locked out the brickwork category after Daniel Klosowski and Michael Tailby won the junior and senior awards.

Oldham College also managed two wins with Abdus Samir winning the senior prize in painting and decorating and Jonathan Rhodes the junior category in electrical installation.

Salford City College and Stockport College both returned home a first prize each, Salford’s Gyunay Asanov was the victor in plumbing’s junior competition and Stockport’s Milee Gavin Greeves took the junior painting and decorating award.

Hopwood Hall College used the home advantage to win three individual categories; Mosam Ramzan won the senior first prize in the electrical installation category, Oliver Forman won first prize in senior plastering and Cian McGilloway locked out the plastering top prizes with his first place in the junior plastering competition.

Mosam Ramzan, studying a level two electrical installation course, said of his win: “I’m really happy to have won. I entered the competition to see how well I would do, I didn’t think I would do this well!

“It’s really good that two other Technology students won for our college too, I think it shows how hard we all work and how much our tutors support us.”

The overall win for Hopwood Hall was the third consecutive victory in construction at GMCG.

Terry Collier, centre director at Hopwood Hall College, expressed pride in the efforts of his staff and students, he said: “I can’t praise our students enough for the effort they all put in for GMCG, the quality of their work in each category was exceptionally high and they were all extremely positive in their efforts.

“I’d also like to thank our staff members for the work they have put into hosting the competition. They did a brilliant job of showcasing our industry leading learning facilities and their dedication to our students has clearly paid off with the individual category wins as well as the overall win.”
