Jason Smart avoids jail after he was filmed beating his dog in Castleton

Jason Smart has avoided jail after being captured on CCTV beating his dog, Frank, outside Team Sasha dog groomer’s in Castleton in October.

He appeared before Manchester and Salford Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and has been banned for keeping animals for seven months and Frank will be rehomed as a result of a deprivation order made under S33 of the Welfare Act.

Smart has also been ordered to pay £560 in costs, an £85 victim surcharge and has a 12 month community order for 150 hours unpaid work.

He pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal on 8 February.

Frank, a tan Staffordshire bull terrier, was stood cowering by a bus stop on Manchester Road as his owner approached him, before striking him.

Frank was removed from his owner the day after following public outcry.
