Phone scam warning

Date published: 31 March 2017

Police are warning of a phone scam - residents receive a call from a withheld number with the caller claiming are from the tax office.

The caller says the resident has underpaid tax from a particular time period and they need to confirm details.

They ask for your National Insurance Number and date of birth. This is then followed by a request for payment.

Police say: "The Inland Revenue or local tax office would never ask for details upfront in that way or payment over the phone. Protect yourself and put the receiver down."
