Combating loneliness and isolation

Date published: 31 March 2017

A project to help combat loneliness and isolation was launched this week by Saint George’s Church, Oakenrod.

Mayor of Rochdale, Ray Dutton, was on hand to propose a toast to the success of Places of Welcome, a nationwide scheme to ensure that people have somewhere to find friendship, conversation and a welcoming cup of tea and snacks.

Several people were present to take part in the hour-long session which is held from 10.30am- to 11.30am each week on Tuesday mornings.

The Rev Karen Smeeton, vicar of Saint George's and its sister church Saint Clement’s, Spotland, said: “Loneliness is a growing problem for many people and just having a chance to chat and enjoy a convivial atmosphere for an hour a week can help.

“Although we are Christian churches the project welcomes everyone of any faith or none and we hope that regulars will form friendships with others they meet here. There is always someone to lend a listening ear and help where we can.’

The Places of Welcome project also operates each Thursday from noon to 1.00pm in Saint Chad’s Church in central Rochdale.
