Moss Row residents salute bygone days with costume celebration

Date published: 31 March 2017

It’s still the Good Old Days for over 30 residents at the Moss Row Independent Living Scheme on Raven Street, Norden.

For the past ten weeks they have been revelling in memories of times gone by as part of an oral history project to share thoughts and recollections of growing up locally.

Project champion and resident Shirley Lundergan said: “During the dark winter months people get isolated. We wanted to bring people together to enjoy each other’s company. The idea of talking about the old days was a natural.”

Shirley contacted the local arts and heritage centre Touchstones to see what they could do to help.

Project participant Hilda said: “Touchstones were brilliant. They lent us boxes with photos and samples of old stuff like soap powder cartons. We would look at the items and say what we knew about them and what memories they brought back.”

Janet Byrne of Touchstones said: “We are always happy to provide reminiscent packs for projects like this. The photos and items really help to bring back memories that unlock the past.”

At the end of the ten week project the residents had a social evening where they dressed up in period clothing and came together to celebrate with a sing-a-long, food and vibrant conversation.

Ken Griffin, who provided the music and was emcee for the night, said: “I love doing these events. Everyone is so enthusiastic. You can literally see the years roll away.”

The project received RBH funding after being approached by the residents.
