Councillor Mohammed Zaman nominated as Deputy Mayor

Date published: 30 March 2017

Councillor Mohammed Zaman has been nominated as Deputy Mayor for the 2017/18 Municipal Year.

His nomination was moved by Councillor Farnell and seconded by Councillor Jacqui Beswick.

Addressing the Council, Councillor Zaman said: “Thank you for supporting my nomination as Deputy Mayor.”

The Council utilises the following formula for determining nomination to the position of Deputy Mayor:

Following the elections in May each year or, in a year with no local election, the date when an election would otherwise have been held, one point is allocated in respect of each member of the Council. The group with the highest number of points nominates the Deputy Mayor for the municipal year twelve months hence. 60 points are then subtracted from this group’s running total.

This procedure of crediting and debiting points is continued on an annual basis and the running total updated accordingly.

One point is awarded to the successful group at a by-election where the seat was vacant at the May election or in a year with no local election the date when an election would otherwise have been held.

In the event of a tie, the group with the highest number of seats on the Council will nominate the Deputy Mayor for the following municipal year.
