Sue Webb’s 100 mile fundraising challenge

Date published: 29 March 2017

Mother of two, Sue Webb, from Rochdale, is nearing completion of a gruelling 100 mile challenge to help scientists find a cure for brain tumours.

So far Sue has raised in excess of £1,200 for vital research into the disease which kills more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.

Sue, whose 42-year-old brother Iain, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in December 2015, came up with the idea to mark Brain Tumour Awareness month. She decided to set herself an extreme physical challenge which she could tackle each day, and which would reflect the challenges faced on a daily basis by her brother, who lives in Wallasey, on his road to recovery.

Thirty-nine year old Sue, who is referred to locally as ‘the pink lady’ thanks to her bright pink Brain Tumour Research running kit, runs an average of just over three miles a day, setting out in all weathers, including one afternoon when she battled on through four hail storms. She has juggled her runs with a demanding job and busy role as the mother of two. With just a few miles remaining before her final run on Friday, 31 March, Sue is looking forward to resting her tired legs and celebrating her tremendous achievement.

Speaking with the final mile now tantalisingly close, Sue said: “I was determined to step outside my comfort zone and do something really challenging to highlight the struggle people face once diagnosed with a brain tumour. It’s a devastating disease, yet until my brother was diagnosed, as a family we knew very little about it and research into a cure is shockingly underfunded. Iain’s shown incredible courage and my challenge, although physically demanding, is negligible by comparison.”
