Wing Commander David Forbes, the President of Rochdale’s branch of the Royal British Legion, has spoken of his pride after a trip to the palace to collect his Member of the British Empire award.

Wing Commander Forbes was bestowed with the medal in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list for services to the voluntary and charity sector.

He has dedicated many years supporting young people’s and ex-service charities across the Greater Manchester region.

Wing Commander Forbes had a long air cadets career with his service include spells as a cadet, officer, Squadron Commander and Wing Commander. Today, he is still actively involved in the work of the local veterans’ association.

At the ceremony, held at Buckingham Place, Wing Commander Forbes was presented with his medal by his Royal Highness Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

He said: “I was humbled and honoured to be awarded such a prestigious award with members of my family present.

“It was amazing to see so many famous faces like the wonderful Sir Ken Dodd, who was there to collect his knighthood for services to entertainment.

“Throughout my life I have tried to serve the local community to the best of ability. This award is not just for me, but for the many amazing people I have worked with over the years.”

Councillor Alan McCarthy, the council’s lead member for the armed forces, said: “This is a richly deserved award for a wonderful servant of the community who has always carried out his work with great commitment and integrity. It underlines how David’s work is valued, not just locally and regionally but across the whole country.”

Wing Commander Forbes joined the Royal British Legion in 1998 and became President of Rochdale branch in 2005 and Vice President of Greater Manchester County in 2002.

He assisted in organising the Lord Lieutenants' Cadet Poppy Appeal Competition and a Member of the National Steering Group for the Poppy Appeal since 2003.

He has two daughters and five grandchildren and one great grandchild; he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant 2003.
