St Cuthbert's RC High School

Date published: 10 March 2017

During half-term 46 GCSE Drama, Music, Art and Media pupils from years 9, 10 and 11 went on the annual Expressive Arts trip to London.

The trip included an evening performance of Lion King, a trip on the London Eye and a visit to the Harry Potter Studios. Despite storm Doris’ best attempts, she did nothing to dampen our spirits. Lion King was a spectacular show –visually stunning.

The London Eye ride was impressive and so smooth despite the wind raging outside of the pod, and as for Harry Potter, only one word, amazing. The pupils were a real credit to the school and were a pleasure to be with.

Specialisms News

Year 9 Vcert Business Studies - Pupils had a tasting session yesterday to see if they could identify the difference between branded chocolate and value for money chocolate.

In Music our male vocal group is preparing for their first performance. They have rehearsed a fantastic version of 'Have Mercy on Me' by Shawn Mendes with full choreography.

In Yr 10 Media pupils have produced and edited a film to be delivered in Mr Fitzsimon's assemblies this week. The film's sensitive topic of bereavement had to be dealt with maturely and pupils responded by creating something with a positive message on how we support each other as a community when dealing with grief. This is especially important as a Catholic school where love and support for others is part of our mission on a daily basis.

Yr 7 and 8 Drama club continues every Thursday lunchtime in the Hall. Pupils are given a weekly theme and rewarded with vivos for the best performances.

In Technology Year 11 pupils are focusing on exam skills as they have now completed all controlled assessments. Many pupils are accessing the daily lunchtime intervention sessions offered by Mrs Rothwell and Mr Jones.

LINC news

The first of the two groups from St. Vincent’s joined us for our final session in the Learning and Innovation Centre. The students were very excited to be back at St. Cuthbert’s and the five media teams worked very hard creating text graphics, moving images and sound bites.

We used the green screen in our Media Suite to photograph the groups and they enjoyed importing the images graphics sound and music into their very own adverts.

At break time the class were also very eager to visit our Cuisine area in school to taste the famous St. Cuthbert’s homemade biscuits. At the end of the session the adverts were played on our C Touch interactive board. The adverts looked so professional as students had thought carefully about which photographs to use and which music suited the adverts the best. After Easter we are looking forward to seeing Year 4 when we will be making radio broadcasts using our very own radio station.

Chaplaincy News

Last week the entire school received their ashes on Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of the season of Lent.

It is a time of prayer, fasting and giving.

Every pupil and member of staff has had the opportunity to receive the ashes.

Teams of staff and pupils visited classes to lead short services of reflection and the chapel was open at lunchtime for anyone who missed out.

PE News

Under 12 Year 7 boys’ football.

On the first game back after the winter break our Year 7 team completed a 3 - 2 win at home versus a strong Oulder Hill team.

St Cuthbert's took the lead in the first half with a goal from Bailey McCallion only for Oulder Hill to equalize before the break. St Cuthbert's again took the lead in the second half- McCallion again scoring twice to complete his hat-trick after soaking up pressure from the opposition. Oulder Hill replied with a goal before the end of the game and put on a bit of pressure. In the end St Cuthbert’s stood strong for a good 3 points. Well done boys.
