Council spending £1 million on improving Rochdale’s environment

Date published: 08 March 2017

Rochdale Borough Council is spending £1 million improving the environment across the borough, including keeping streets clean, improving ‘grotspots’, planting flowers and stepping up enforcement against littering, dog-fouling and anti-social behaviour.

Controversial A boards will be under review, but currently, no decisions have been made regarding their removal.

Mark Widdup, Director of Neighbourhoods at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Having attractive, welcoming town centres, which look really good, is a priority for Rochdale Borough Council. That’s why we’ve invested an additional £1 million into improving the environment which includes extra teams who will work around the borough keeping our streets clean, cleaning up ‘grotspots’ and planting flowers.

“We are also boosting enforcement in the coming months, so we can step up the fight against littering, dog fouling, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour.

“We are currently reviewing the council’s enforcement policy to make sure our officers have the appropriate powers to enforce, and this will include reviewing a range of issues, including A boards, but no decisions have been made on this as yet.

“In the meantime, we would ask all businesses to be considerate when displaying A boards, as they can cause obstruction and be a hazard.”
