Whitworth takes part in the Great British Spring Clean

Date published: 06 March 2017

Over the weekend a group of  ‘Keep Whitworth Tidy’ volunteers removed 28 bags of rubbish from local streets and public areas in just one hour.

Litter picks took place in two locations in Whitworth as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

Six bags of litter were collected from around Cowm Reservoir and 22 bags (plus bikes, wood, plants and other general items) were collected from the area around Hall Street.

In addition to the litter picks, a volunteer started an initiative to raise awareness of dog fouling, particularly around the reservoir. She left lots of free dog poo bags with a note asking people to take and use them in order to keep the place clean and tidy.

A spokesperson said: "If every adult in Whitworth picked up just one piece of litter and put it in a bin, that would be 4000 pieces of rubbish disposed of. Imagine if everyone picked up at least one piece of litter every day for the next year?"

Organised picks are usually held monthly on a Sunday morning from 10am until 11am, equipment is provided and all are welcome.
