Council to spend £1 million repairing potholes

An extra £1 million pounds will be spent on repairing potholes across the Borough.

Councillor Neil Emmott, cabinet member for highways, said: “It is a fact that the government allocates 40 times more spending on maintaining national roads, which it controls, compared with local roads which councils oversee.

“Local residents have told us repairing potholes is one of their main priorities, so we have listened and taken action. We invested £1m last year and we are going to do the same again, using in part funding we have from the sale of land and buildings.

“Our radical investment programme, including an extra £12m on highway repairs since 2012, will ensure better road surfaces, smoother journeys and less potholes. The spending will ensure high quality road surfaces across the borough for generations to come.”

This comes just two days after Rochdale Online reported RMBC have paid out nearly £2 million on pothole-related compensation claims since 2012.
