ESOL students at Hopwood Hall College donated £111.40 to Alzheimer's Society after holding an international cook off and ceilidh.

The students, who study English Language to enable their integration into the UK employment market, practised and performed traditional Irish, Scottish and English dances with live ceilidh music.

Dishes brought in by the students for the cookery competition included foods from Pakistan, Portugal, Syria, Lebanon, Libya and Iran in a celebration of the students’ own cultures.

Coming out on top in the competition was Azam Iranpoor and her Persian Halwa (a pistachio dessert).

Fatima Jalo, a student originally from Guinea-Bissau, was a big fan of the traditional home nations dances, she said: "It was extremely interesting to experience some traditional music and dancing, a lot of it I had never seen before.

“I’m really happy our learning class has benefitted other people as well with the donations to the charity.”
