Valuable necklace with ashes in stolen from woman driving car on Kirkway

Date published: 14 February 2017

A woman has been left ‘traumatised’ after a valuable necklace with her mother’s ashes in was stolen from her car on Kirkway in Middleton on Monday afternoon.

The victim, a 49-year-old woman who did not wish to be identified, was driving along Kirkway near St Peter’s school shortly before 3.40pm when three offenders on two motorbikes approached her vehicle, which was stationary in traffic.

One of the offenders smashed the front passenger window, then reached in and stole a handbag following a struggle with the woman.

The necklace, containing ashes of the victim’s late mother, has been described as ‘silver, like a teardrop shape in a small leather Spanish purse.’

A work colleague of the victim said: “As you can imagine, she is utterly traumatised. The necklace containing her late mum’s ashes is extremely precious to her and may have been dumped.”

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly before 3.40pm on Monday 13 February 2017, police were called to Kirkway, Middleton, to reports of a personal robbery.

“Three offenders, travelling on two motorbikes, approached a vehicle in stationary traffic. One of the offenders smashed the front passenger window with an unknown object, then reached in and stole a handbag following a struggle with the woman.

“The offenders made off on the bikes towards Townley Street, Middleton.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 and quote the reference number 1371 of 13/02/17.
