Seven suspended and one expelled after brawl at Hopwood Hall College

Date published: 13 February 2017

A fight that broke out between a number of students at the Middleton campus of Hopwood Hall College has resulted in seven students being suspended and one expelled, and is being investigated by Greater Manchester Police.

A spokesperson for Hopwood Hall said: "Hopwood Hall College can confirm there was an incident involving students at the Middleton campus on the 2 February 2017.

"Although it was an isolated incident, it is being fully investigated by Greater Manchester Police and seven learners who were involved have been suspended whilst the matter is investigated internally pending disciplinary action. Another learner has been excluded permanently.

"Incidents of this nature are extremely rare in our college and the message has been clearly communicated to learners that it is totally unacceptable for anyone to be involved in or incite any behaviour of this kind.

"Hopwood Hall College is committed to continuing to provide a safe environment for our learners and staff.

"Our security team were immediately at the scene of the incident and dealt with the incident swiftly and appropriately.

"We regret that the actions of a handful of individuals may tarnish the excellent reputation both students and staff have built together, a reputation that was recently justified after Ofsted rated the college as good."
