Ms Margerison Buckley and her four children were asleep at the time and were awakened by neighbours banging on their door at around 12.50am.

The black Nissan was last driven at around 5.15pm the day before, just hours before the blaze, which spread to the garage and damaged a neighbour’s solar panels and brick work.

She said: “My neighbours woke us by slamming and banging on the doors telling us the car and the garage were on fire and that the car sounded like it was going to explode.

“I don’t want this to happen to anyone else; it was terrifying. My neighbours had to be evacuated as well.

Ms Margerison-Buckley says she was later informed by Nissan there was an outstanding recall on her model of car, which she bought in August 2015 for £15,000. She says she was not aware of such a recall as she’d received no correspondence from the DVLA.

She added: “I hope Nissan do the right thing as a manufacturer, whether the fault relates to the outstanding recall or not.”

She also praised the response of the emergency services, saying: “Police and the fire service were amazing; they both arrived fairly quickly. They had the children wrapped up and sat in the fire engine whilst this was going on.”

The family haven’t been left without transport as Ms Margerison-Buckley’s mother has loaned the use of her car and will instead use a bicycle as her main mode of transportation.

Ms Margerison-Buckley’s insurance company is now handling the car fire to identify a specific fault.

A spokesperson for Nissan said: “Ms Margerison-Buckley has contacted Nissan customer services earlier this week and we are in dialogue with her about this incident.”
