Campaign to tackle 'accident blackspot' on on New Broad Lane

Date published: 10 February 2017

Councillors Kathleen Nickson and Richard Farnell are driving a road safety campaign to tackle an 'accident blackspot' on on New Broad Lane.

The councillors were contacted by residents  after a car spun out of control on a sharp bend and demolished a garden wall.

They are convinced it’s only a matter of time before there’s a fatality at the site.

Councillor Nickson said: “Although that section of road has speed bumps to slow cars down, they still speed up and down it with scant regard for the residents who have to put up with the nuisance.

“You could tell from the damage that the car had hit the garden wall at speed before spinning round and hitting it again backwards. That tells you how fast it must have been travelling. It’s a genuine concern.”

Councillor Farnell added: “This is completely unacceptable and we will be talking with our highways and engineers to see what we can do to stop it.

“I have lost count the number of accidents there has been on this road. It's only a matter of time before someone is killed on that bend and by that time it’ll be too late. Something needs to be done and it needs to be done now.”
