Cold with snow showers for some

Date published: 09 February 2017

It’s getting even chillier for many as cold air spreads across the UK from the east bringing with it a chance of snow showers.

Temperatures have dropped throughout the UK this week as a colder, polar continental airmass has moved in due to high pressure over Scandinavia. We are seeing the coldest daytime temperatures in the east, while overnight temperatures have been lowest in the west due to cloudless skies.

Friday night could bring the coldest night of the winter so far with temperatures possibly getting down to minus double figures, the current lowest temperature of the 2016/17 winter is -11°C which was recorded at Cromdale in Moray, North East Scotland, on 5 December.

As we get closer to the weekend the chance of snow showers increases, particularly in eastern areas. The north east has already seen some flurries over higher ground and these showers will start to fall to lower levels by Thursday evening.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Richard Young, said: “There’s been a notable dip in temperatures across the UK this week and we could see the coldest night of the winter on Friday night if skies are clear as forecast in North West Scotland.

“With this easterly air flow and a chance of some snow showers it will feel very cold this weekend, especially on Sunday, along the south coast where wind chill will make it feel more like -4°C during the day, so wrap up warm.”

Winds will have picked up across the south of the UK by Sunday and this, combined with the cold temperatures, will make it feel very chilly. In the video below meteorologist Aiden McGivern explains why wind chill makes it feel so much colder.

As we head into next week the air flow swings round slightly to come from the south east meaning it should start to feel less cold while staying relatively dry and quite cloudy for most.
