Fatality disrupts all Northern rail services
Date published: 08 February 2017
A fatality in Penwortham, outside Preston, caused disruption to all Northern rail services on Tuesday (7 February).
As a result, services across the network were affected, including a reduction in carriages to a peak-service train through Rochdale to Manchester at 8.05am.
Commuters, who were unaware of the incident, reported some had been waiting more than an hour for trains, with some running late and others cancelled.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “A man sadly died after being struck by a train on the railway line close to Factory Lane, Penwortham.
“Officers were called just after 5.20am and attended alongside paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service.
“This incident is not being treated as suspicious and officers are working to identify the man and inform his family.
“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
