Poorly-constructed ‘eyesore’ ramp on Halifax Road was built without planning permission

Date published: 06 February 2017

A poorly-constructed ramp branded an ‘eyesore’ on Halifax Road has been revealed as being constructed without planning permission.

The ramp, first noticed in December 2016, was described by Rochdale residents as ‘a mess and a hazard’ and ‘an eyesore’. A wooden handrail, once held together with duct tape, did not appear to be attached to the ramp, a layer of uneven concrete laid over wonky bricks and stones.

A planning application has since been submitted.

Mark Robinson, Assistant Director of Economy at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “This ramp was constructed without planning permission or the approval of our building regulations team. A retrospective planning application has now been submitted.

“Our building control team are working with the business concerned to re-design the scheme to ensure it meets safety standards. If this is not successful, the council will take action to remove the ramp.”
