Homeless men sleeping under motorway bridge given a home in Rochdale

Date published: 06 February 2017

Two homeless men rescued from sleeping under a motorway service station bridge by kind-hearted policeman, PC Stuart Ockwell, have now been given a home in Rochdale.

PC Ockwell said: “I have today seen them and am pleased to say they have been offered and have accepted the tenancy on a flat in Rochdale.

“Thank you all for your offers of assistance; there were too many to thank individually.”

PC Ockwell said the men had found themselves in such a dire situation after ‘a catalogue of unfortunate events’.

The two men were sleeping in the caravan, which became mouldy following a leak, after their vehicle towing it broke down beyond repair.

As a result, the two men took to sleeping in the only dry place: under the motorway bridge of Birch Services directly next to the traffic.

At the time, PC Ockwell said: ““Various charities were contacted for temporary shelter but no vacancies have been found, but an appointment is in place with Rochdale Council for a potential permanent property for them.

“I would like to thank two of our local stores. We have contacted the management at Tesco in Middleton who have donated a selection of sandwiches and water for them and the management at KFC who donated their staff meals so they could have a hot meal for the night.”
