Olympic gold medallist Dame Mary Peters, who has supported Springhill Hospice for many years, enjoyed lunch at Springhill Tea Room and Gift Shop last week, meeting staff and volunteers, before making her way to the Hospice.

On arriving at the 16 bed palliative care unit, Dame Mary met with Day Hospice pa-tients, staff and trustees and spent time with the Hospice’s founder and President, Margaret Geoghegan MBE.

Dame Mary won the gold medal in the women’s pentathlon at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, competing for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Dame Mary established a charitable Sports Trust in 1975 to support talented young sportsmen and women, both able-bodied and disabled, from across Northern Ireland, as well as being a Patron of Springhill Hospice for the last 20 years.

Julie Halliwell, Chief Executive Springhill Hospice said: “It was lovely to be able to show Dame Mary around the Hospice and give her an update on everything since her last visit. Our Day Hospice patients were thrilled to meet her, she is an inspiration to us all and a wonderful supporter of Springhill Hospice.”
