Teachers get a soaking for charity

Date published: 28 January 2017

Teachers proved themselves to be good sports when they lined up in the stocks to face wet sponges.

The sponge-off was the last fundraiser to be organised by Whitworth Community High School’s Year 10 Youth Enterprise Challenge team.

Sam Milton, 15, said: “We are raising money for Rossendale Hospice and we just decided to soak people.”

The stocks were provided by St Bartholomew’s CE School in Whitworth and teachers volunteered to be locked in.

Dominik Seale, 14, said: “We charged students 50p for two wet sponges or £1 for five and we had a lot of people wanting to take part.”

The sponge-off was held during lunchtime break, fortunately on a sunny day, and all but one of the teachers changed into sportswear for the challenge. However Assistant Headteacher Paul Dugdale chose to stay wearing his suit.

Sam said: “The students were very excited just to see the teachers in the stocks.

“Being a part of the Youth Enterprise team has been great fun and a good experience because I have got to know new people and got to work in a team with them.”

Dominik said the challenge helped him to talk to other people and to learn more about how to raise money and organise an event for charity.

The team raised £80.50 from the sponge-off making their final total for Rossendale Hospice £1,085

The challenge is a competition between six high schools and the final presentation will be on Thursday 2 February.
