Repairs finally begin on water pipe leak at Boarshaw Cemetery

Date published: 27 January 2017

Work to repair a burst water pipe at Boarshaw Cemetery finally started on Thursday (26 January), despite being reported before Christmas.

Chairman of The Friends of Boarshaw Cemetery, Dave Nelson, said: “This leakage in Boarshaw Cemetery was reported over 12 weeks ago to Rochdale Borough Council. It was again reported at the Friends meeting on the 10 January.

“Knowing that this leakage is on a metered supply, I asked who will pick up the tab for this. The response from a member of the council was that they would. So much for budget and cutback restrictions, as we the public are paying for this through our council tax.”

A burst water pipe underneath the tarmac of the road inside the cemetery has been identified as the source of the leak.

A spokesperson for Rochdale Borough Council said: “We have been working with United Utilities and our contractors to address the problem. Work began on Thursday 26 January to temporarily stem the flow and as we fit further rectification works should be completed in the next day or so.

“Work has been stopped during funerals as a mark of respect.”
