Water leak in Whitworth potential ice hazard

Date published: 27 January 2017

A large water leak covering the junction of Market Street and Tonacliffe Road, has sparked concern of ice due to the low temperatures on Friday (27 January).

Dave Moulton, who passed the leak earlier today, said: “When this freezes, it's going to be a nightmare. It’s just wet at the moment just before Healey Corner. So please be careful later.”

The temperatures are due to stay low around one to three degrees in Whitworth tonight.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “We were called at around 10.50am today to reports of a leak on Tonacliffe Road, close to Healey Corner. Highways and the water board attended, and the road was closed while the leak is dealt with.”

United Utilities has confirmed engineers have been on site and are currently investigating if the issue is related to the water network. A spokesman said: “If there is an issue with our water network, we’re not aware of any customers without water at the moment.”
